Dear Mr. Hawk

COME ON! I know it was my first ride of the year but am I really that slow? Did it look like I might keel over any minute and provide a tasty treat? What about that large doe and raccoon I passed earlier? They were already dead. It's really disconcerting and slightly depressing to see your shadow constantly circling me for the entire climb up S.R. 32.

Regards,
Not so fast

I am assuming that you enjoyed the ride in spite of having been observed while doing so. Keep it up anyway.

This is an all too common problem early in the season. My solution to this is to place several field mice in an old frozen yogurt container and then place the container with the mice in my basket - you have a basket I presume! Then when the hawk, eagle or condor start circling above, I release the mice on to the road and the bird of prey is easily distracted leaving you free to ride on. This also works with wolverines or badgers that might be pacing you.

However, it does not work with mountain lions or bears. The best protection from these large predators is to always ride with someone fatter and slower.......like your dad!

p.s. do not try this with gerbils. They are too slow and easy pickings for the hawk who will soon be right back overhead licking his beak.
